Rhoda G. Freeman died Sept. 12, 2013, after bravely battling cancer for several years. She was born on Aug.
23, 1943, in Lewiston, Maine. She was the daughter of William and Miriam Goldstein. Rhoda graduated from
Lewiston High School and Colby College and then earned a Master's Degree at New York University.
After teaching in New York City, Rhoda moved to San Francisco, where she met her future husband, Robert
Freeman. After stays in New York City, Maine, New Jersey and Wisconsin, Rhoda and Bob returned to Maine,
where they operated a packing and shipping store in Brunswick. Rhoda and Bob worked together for 15 years
and eventually sold the business and moved to Florida. They returned to Maine seven years ago.
While in Florida, Rhoda was the area director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. She
transferred her directorship back to Maine when she returned home. She also worked for the American Cancer
Society. Both Rhoda and Bob were volunteers for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
Rhoda was predeceased by her parents, her son James and her brother Allan. Among survivors are her
husband Bob; her sister Natalie Brenner; her son Richard Freeman, daughter-in-law Terri Freeman, and
granddaughter Willa. She also leaves loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins
and many good friends.
Rhoda's courageous battle with cancer, fought with humor and a positive attitude, was an inspiration to all who
knew her.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 15, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Coastal Cremation Services, 471
Deering Avenue, Portland, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer
Society, One Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham, Maine, 04086; or the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11
Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, Maine, 04074.
