Mary P. Whalen, age 81, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on Friday, February 21st, 2014, after a week of devoted, loving care in the Maine Medical Center Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

Mary was born in Eastport, Maine, on October 20th, 1932.  Her mother was from Grand Manan, where Mary often summered as a youth and still has family members.  After attending Eastport schools, she completed the nursing program at Deaconess/Simmons College in Boston where she graduated as an RN.  Over the years, she worked as a nurse in many capacities and locations, including hospitals, nursing homes, and private practices, as well as volunteering with the Red Cross.
On August 14th, 1954, she married George N. Whalen, also of Eastport.  George was an active duty Marine and for the next twenty years they lived in multiple states, including Hawaii.  Along the way they raised two children, Debra and Patrick, before coming back to Maine to settle in Farmingdale in 1972.

Mary was an active member of the community.  She belonged to the Green Street United Methodist Church, where her contributions were ongoing.  She was president of the United Methodist Women for years, was the current chair of the Missions Committee, and for many years was the layperson representative on the Board of Ordained Ministry.  She also donated her time and energies to the Augusta Food Bank and was recently honored with a “Community Champion” award for her work with the food bank.

Mary enjoyed many activities including cooking, gardening, and sewing (especially potholders that she bestowed on friends, family and sometimes even strangers).  She was a lively member of the local Red Hats chapter and delighted her fellow members with her unique and whimsical hats at their monthly luncheons.  In her later years she traveled extensively throughout Europe and parts of the US, including Alaska.  One of her favorite destinations was her summer camp on Boyden Lake in Robbinston, Maine, where she spent many happy days with family and friends.

What no obituary can ever convey is how deeply Mary touched others with her loving spirit and generous heart.  She made friends easily with young and old alike, and her sharp wit and keen memory combined to make her a wonderful storyteller.  She will be missed by many.

She was predeceased by her husband George in 1994.  She is survived by her daughter Debra and her partner Rob of Westbrook; her son Patrick and his wife Deena of Freeport; her granddaughter Jamie Senior of Boston; her granddaughter Julia Senior of New York City; her dear friend and traveling companion, Linda McNeff of Bowdoinham; and numerous extended family members.

Her family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Maine Medical Center for their kindness and compassion while Mary was there.

A memorial service will be held at Green Street United Methodist Church on 13 Green Street in Augusta at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 2nd, 2014.
