Anita June Carland of Portland area, 86, died peacefully on May 30 accompanied by her family. Anita was born on July 21, 1927 in Shelbyville, Indiana to the late Loren D. and M. Louise A. Collins (King/Marois). During her youth, she lived in various towns in New England, including the Dover, NH area, where she spent cherished time with her extended family. She then settled in Portland, ME.

Anita was a distinguished student at Sacred Heart and St. Patrick’s grammar schools.  After graduating from Portland High School in 1947, she was employed at the New England telephone company for a few years prior to marrying the late Edward B. Carland of Portland, ME. Together, in their 30 years of marriage, they raised eight children. Once her children were older, she was employed by Northgate and CVS Pharmacies, and a local answering service.

Anita’s greatest contribution was her devotion to her children for whom she lovingly cared day and night. Her children were her world and she spent many evenings at their sports events and other activities. She was a stoic woman strengthened by the many hardships she endured and guided by her belief in God.

She was a communicant of St Joseph’s parish for many years. She also participated in a bowling league with Ed. Later in life, Anita was a devoted New England Patriots fan, never missing a game.

Anita is survived by her children : William Carland and his wife Barbara of Sioux Falls, SD, James Carland of Gray, ME, Thomas Carland and his wife Sandy of Bullhead City, Arizona, Kathleen Williams and her husband Steve of Gorham, ME, Timothy Carland of Falmouth, ME, Maureen Jordan and her husband David of Scarborough, ME, Francine Carland of Branford, CT, and Edward (Ted) M. Carland and his wife, Celine of Portland. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She will be dearly remembered and greatly missed by her family.

In lieu of flowers,contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southern Maine.

A mass in her honorwill be held at St. Maxmillian Kolbe church in Scarborough on Tuesday, June 3, at 10:00 am.
