Donald E. Beane, Sr. of Portland died Tuesday July15, 2014 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough.                          

He was born in Hollis, Maine on May 20, 1926 to Ellen (Bailey) and Cecil F. Beane and grew up in Portland.

Donald enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1943.  He was wounded at Iwo Jima and saw action at Saipan and Okinawa. He was recalled during the Korean Conflict to train Marines in combat skills at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina.

Thanks to the G.I. Bill, Donald attended and graduated from Grays Business College. He worked most of his career as an executive accountant at American Hoist and Derrick in Portland.

An avid and eclectic reader, Donald loved to be engaged with people in conversation about ideas. He loved Portland and especially enjoyed spending time at the Eastern Promenade and Peaks Island.

Donald was predeceased by his four siblings and his wife of 28 years, Betty (B. Peck) Beane.

He is survived by his five children, Janet Flood of Gorham, Elizabeth Beane of Gorham, John Beane of Gardiner, Donald Beane, Jr. of Topsham and Kathryn Wallace of Holland MI, as well as thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A gathering of remembrance will be held by the family at a later
date.
