South Portland – Dennise E. Matson, 72, of South Portland passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday April 2, 2015.  Dennise, known to all who loved her as “Denny” was born on May 25, 1942, the daughter of the late Elliott and Phyllis Cushing.

Denny was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.  She loved getting lost in a good book, sometimes reading four or five a week.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and had a very special bond with her sister Lulie VanDeventer, sharing that bond with her niece Sheila and nephew Wendell.  She found great joy in sharing in the lives of her five granddaughters.  She was especially proud of her seven great grandchildren.

Denny had a kind and caring spirit.  She loved to laugh and have a good time with her family and friends.  Her wish for each and everyone she loved was just simple happiness.  She wanted everyone to be happy.  Denny will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Denny was predeceased by her brother Elliott Cushing, her sister and best friend Betty Bickford, her daughter-in-law Natalie Matson and her sons-in-law Lionel Plante and Billy Foote.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Andrew “Skip” Matson, cat Silky, and her children; Bill Matson, Beth Matson, Sherrie Matson-Foote and fiancé Ira Bostian and Coleen DiPhillipo and her husband Anthony, as well as her five granddaughters; Jackie, K.C., Ashley, Sophia, Grace, and seven great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by a sister Suzie, sisters-in-law Deanna and Andrea, brother-in-law- George and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at the South Portland Nursing Home, and give a special thank you to Denny’s end of life friend Sally Flynn.

A celebration of Denny’s life will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 2pm at Coastal Cremation Services, 471 Deering Ave, Portland.  At Denny’s request, please dress casual and with bright colors.
