Matthew Mark York, Sr.

May 29, 2015

Portland – Matthew Mark York, 50, of Portland was called home on Friday morning after a very courageous battle with Poly Cystic Kidney Disease, a disease that had taken many of his family members.  Matthew had also lost his only son, Matthew, Jr. and his mother Dorothy York, just one year ago this past week.  It was a heavy burden he carried throughout the year.  Truly Matthew walked through the gates of Heaven to the waiting arms of his son.

Matthew was born in Portland and raised in Kennedy Park with his four brothers and sister.  He lived in Portland all his life.  Matthew met his wife Linda and knew from day one they would be soulmates.  Linda and Matt had been married for 31 years and both have said every day what a blessing it was.  Linda and Matthew had two beautiful children; Matthew, Jr. and Meagan.  They worked very hard to ensure their children had everything they could ever want or need to be good, responsible adults.

Matthew worked at Amato’s Bakery for many years and eventually moved on to Botto’s Bakery on Washington Ave, where he worked  for over twenty years until PKD took hold and caused him to leave his job.

Although Matthew was tired and weak, the joy was so very apparent as he walked his only daughter down the aisle this past March to be married.  Meagan is truly Daddy’s girl.

His two year old grandson Zachary and one year old foster granddaughter Jazzy were a blessing as he would take them to the promenade and push them on the swings until he was unable to anymore.  The loved their grandpop very much.

As the days drew near and Matthew realized it was time, his wife Linda and his daughter Meagan stood by his side as a hospice team brought him home to live out his last days with the ones he loved.  Those nine days were a blessing as they, along with Rick, Meagan’s husband and Danny’s friend, a very long time friend of Matthew, also stood by his side to the end.  They made the most of every minute he had left.  He was able to kiss and hold his family each morning and let them know how much they meant to him.

Matthew had very close relationships with his family members, mainly his brother Mark, who stood by his side and drove down from Lincoln to Portland when Matthew was hospitalized many, many times.  Mark officiated Meagan’s wedding and Matthew, Jr’s funeral, as well as their mother’s.

Matthew is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Meagan and her husband Rick Wilcox and their son Zachary and foster daughter Jazzy.  He is also survived by his brothers; Mark York and his wife Mona of Lincoln, John York and his wife Michelle of Portland, and Arthur York and his wife Kim of Portland, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends who had become richer in spirit for having known Matthew.

In his last days, Matthew requested only a graveside service, which will be held on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 12pm at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St, Portland, where he will be laid beside his mother, father and son.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested to contact them for donation information.
