PORTLAND - Richard E. Ward passed away on Nov. 3, 2015, at St. Joseph's Manor, after a long illness. Mr. Ward had been a resident there for the past nine years. Mr. Ward was born in Portland on April 14, 1928, the son of John L. Ward and Annie L. Wells. He was raised in the Riverton neighborhood of Portland and was part of a large family which was common back in those days. He attended Portland Schools but left before graduation and enlisted in the Navy and was part of the Greatest Generation after serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington in the Pacific theatre.
After being discharged from the military, Mr. Ward returned to Portland and worked at the First National Warehouse until his retirement in 1970.
Mr. Ward loved old movies from the 1930s and 1940s. He especially enjoyed Broadway musicals. Whether it was "Oklahoma," "Carousel" or "Guy and Dolls," he could tell you what songs were played and sung by whom. He loved music and played the piano throughout his life.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, John Jr., Henry, Frederick and Lawrence, and one sister, Aristeen. Surviving siblings include Louise M. McGinty, Clifford S. Ward and Louis Ward. There are many nieces and nephews throughout the country. In Mr. Wards later years and declining health he was cared for by nephews David McGinty and Wayne McGinty, and nieces Joanne Flaherty and Ellen Crimmin.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Manor and especially their C Unit.
Burial and services will be private.
