YARMOUTH – Nelle Newton died on February 9, 2016, after a long illness, at her residence in the Harbor unit at Bay Square. She was born December 6, 1931, in Albany, GA., the daughter of Frank Newton and Nelle (Bowen) Newton.
Nelle graduated from Ponce de Leon High School, Class of 1949, in Coral Gables, Fla. She was her class’s salutatorian. A talented pianist, she was accompanist for the school’s chorus. Nelle continued her education at the University of Georgia, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Art. While at Georgia, Nelle was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Nelle made much of her artistic gifts throughout her life, designing and sewing theatrical costumes, crafting nature-inspired stitcheries, making collages, mastering needlepoint, and creating and making eye-catching beads and jewelry inspired by ethnic traditions.
In addition to her son, Richard Rootes, of Moab, Utah, Nelle is survived by her sister Dorothy Lee and her Husband, Raymond of Birmingham, Ala.; her niece Tyla Schaefer and her husband, Arthur, of Freeport; and her Nephews, Kevin Garrett and his wife Echo, of Marietta, GA., and Brian Garrett, and his wife, Angel, of Birmingham, Ala. The family thanks the gifted staff of Harbor Unit at Baysquare, under the compassionate direction of Minerva “Minie” Poleshuk, for the loving care Nelle received while there.
A private memorial service will be held for family and friends at a later date. In Recognition of her life-long love of animals, those who wish may make a donation in Nelle’s name to HART Adoption Center & Shelter for Cats, PO Box 351, and 302 Range Road, Cumberland, Maine 04021.
