George R. Pope, 93, passed away on Dec 21, 2016 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough, Maine. George was born on February 6, 1923 in Homestead, Pennsylvania to George and Elizabeth (Pincsak) Popa.

George attended the University of Pittsburgh and enlisted in the US Army during his sophomore year in 1942. He served his country in the 69th Infantry, Rhineland Central Europe and was honorably discharged in 1945. George graduated from Carnegie Mellon Institute in 1945 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. George attended night school and received his Master’s in Engineering Science from RPI in 1961.  George’s proudest accomplishment was his involvement in the Lunar Module SDIGS program, which helped bring the Apollo 13 back to earth safely.

George was pre-deceased by his first wife Jean, who passed in 1980 and his second wife Shirley, who passed in 2009. George was able to share his last few days in the company of his grandchildren, Sagan and Spencer, as well as, his son Richard and his wife Susan.

Special thanks are given to the professionals at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough, Aging Excellence in Kennebunk, and Beacon Hospice for the compassionate and loving care provided to George during his final months.

A private burial will be held in the spring in Simsbury, CT. In memory of George, please make a donation to the American Red Cross or perhaps donate a pint of blood in his honor. George was passionate about blood donation and donated over 31 gallons in his lifetime.
