Nancy D Knight, 74
Gorham – Nancy D. Knight of Gorham, formerly of Durham and Falmouth, Maine, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Born April 16, 1943, at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine, she lived most of her life in Maine, NH, Massachusetts, and NY.
She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Robert K. Knight, who was the light of her life. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Robert Jr. and Tammy Knight of Standish, Stacey and Jim Sawyer of Gorham, and Steve and Lynn Knight of Westford, VT; and her six beloved grandchildren, Amanda, Christopher, Eric, Mitchell, Brittany, and Cassidy, who knew her as “Mimi.”
Nancy graduated from Woodbury High School in 1960. A non-traditional college student, she began her studies at UNH and continued taking classes at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, NH, where she earned an Associate’s degree in arts. She then went on to the State University of New York, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1990. She was a lifelong learner and enjoyed her many classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
She was a devout Catholic who volunteered her time to the church in many ways, including working with her husband at the pancake breakfasts in Freeport. She taught at the Holy Cross Elementary School in South Portland, Maine, from 1998 – 2005 and at St. Patrick’s School in Portland, Maine, from 1997 – 1998 and 2005 – 2006. Many of her students still remember her with love.
Nancy loved people and made friends wherever she went. She enjoyed gardening, theater, skiing, dance, art, travel, and volunteering at the Maine State Music Theater. She enjoyed taking trips to Italy, Egypt, Russia, England, Mexico, and the cross-country trip she took with her husband to the southwest. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with family and believed life should be lived “always on the sunny side.”
There will be no visiting hours. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22nd, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 299 Main Street, Gorham, with a small reception to follow downstairs. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Maine Children’s Cancer Center.
