Shari Werman Michals of Brookline, Massachusetts and Cape Elizabeth, Maine, died peacefully on Tuesday the 23rd of May in her home at The Landing at Cape Elizabeth.

Shari was born in 1929 in Boston, MA. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Fran and Mark Werman, and her brother, Michael Werman.

Shari grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts where she attended the Choate school. A great athlete, she enjoyed all sports offered there, with a particular talent for field hockey. She attended Girl Scout camps as a child and often remarked these were her favorite days.

Music and arts were always important to Shari. Throughout her childhood and into college, Shari studied the piano. Becoming an accomplished pianist, Shari received her Bachelor of Science degree in Music with a minor in Dramatic Arts from Case Northwestern Reserve. She also spent a summer studying at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland.

She met her former husband, Myron Michals (deceased) during a college vacation with her family in Ogunquit, Maine and, after marrying, began their family in Newton.

Shari's lifelong learning and appreciation of nature and the world led her to an extraordinary life of volunteerism, in particular, with the National Audubon Society, New England Wild Flower Society, and archeological digs in the Mississippi and South Pacific islands.  With a pioneer and explorer spirit, Shari enjoyed piloting small planes, trekking through beautiful woods, and her love of travel took her all over the world, though often she spoke of her favorite times sailing the Caribbean. The ocean was her true love.

Shari was a Life Member of the Beth Israel Hospital Women's Auxiliary, the Women's Committee of the Jewish Family and Children's Service, and the National Women's Committee of Brandeis University.

Shari is survived by her children, Jonathan and Jules, and her grandchildren, Aliana, Benjamin and Katia, all of whom brought her great joy.

In remembrance: "I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other."

As was Shari's wish, a private memorial will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to:
Maine Audubon
