Jacob “Jake” Davis Hill, III, 78, died peacefully June 15, 2018 at his home in Portland, ME, surrounded by his son and a three-month supply of survivalist provisions immediately rendered moot upon his passing.

Born and raised in Columbia, SC, Jake was the son of Jacob Hill Jr. and Theodora Hill. He attended Dreher High School and graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He began his career as an epidemiologist with the South Carolina Department of Health, but later in his life held positions in a variety of different fields, including disabled group home administration, farming, and waste management services.

Jake is survived by his son Jacob Hill, IV of New York City; his sister, Theodora Hill of Savannah, GA; grandsons Wyatt Hill of New York City, and Francis Gailiunas of South Pasadena, CA; and lifelong friend Lee Martin of Columbia, SC. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Helen Hill of New Orleans, LA, and his brother Lana Sims Jr., of Columbia, SC.

While some march to different drummers, Jake marched to a different band entirely. Beloved by many for his sharp wit, intriguing political views, and contrarian nature, he did not suffer fools gladly, particularly those questioning his sharp wit, intriguing political views, and contrarian nature. Few doubted his abundant generosity, however, or his lifelong compassion for the needy and suffering. Jake was unapologetically sui generis.

At Jake’s request there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Meals on Wheels of Portland, ME (smaaa.org, 800-427-4711), or the marijuana legalization advocacy organization of your choice.
