Kendall Alan Hodder passed away Wednesday evening in his home in Portland. He was 85 years old, married for 59 years to his beloved wife Shirley. Al grew up in Belmont, MA, living most of his life in Burlington, MA, and working in the Boston area before moving to Portland, ME upon his retirement. He graduated from Belmont High School and attended Northeastern University. A US Army veteran and a career Human Resources Manager and Consultant, Al’s true loves were his wife and children, fishing, hockey, dancing, and everything about the ocean: he was rarely happier than when he was on a boat or on a beach. A former boy soprano and active community theater member, his claim to fame was his sage role in the ultimate film turkey Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell (seriously). Since moving to Portland, Al has brought love, humor, and fatherly support to many in the Portland restaurant scene where he and Shirley are known as “Portland’s Cool Couple”. He has also been an active volunteer with the ELL students at Portland High School (who knew him as Mr. Al) through the Foster Grandparent Program. Al died as he lived: full of optimism and eager for another day in which he could try and make life better for his wife, kids, friends, family, neighbors, and perfect strangers. Whether he met you in the elevator, the line at the grocery store, the next seat at the bar, game, or theater, his smile and kindness were gifts he readily shared. A truly good man and exceptional husband, father, and grandfather, his joyful spirit for life will be missed. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Lyons) Hodder, children Susan Hodder and her husband Michael Feldmann, Mary Jane Hodder and her husband Toni Wojtkow, Kendall Hodder and his husband Jeffrey Perfect, granddaughter Leah Hodder-Romano, sister Barbara (Hodder) Ashworth, and brothers Walter, Andrew, and Richard Olsen. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 20 from 12:00 – 4:00PM upstairs at Ri Ra, Commercial Street, Portland. A donations page has been set up on Facebook.
